Go Daddy to Enter SSL Certificate Market
Go Daddy Software Inc will enter the SSL certificate market with a low-priced offer. The company plans to repeat its success from the domain name market on the SSL certificate market.
Bob Parsons, CEO of Go Daddy, said that Starfield Technologies, a subsidiary of the company, bought an unused root certificate, trusted by 99% percent of the browsers from ValiCert Inc more than a year ago has been developing the system since then.
Go Daddy will offer 128-bit SSL Certificates for $89.95 per year and for $149.95 for two years. These prices are not the lowest on the market, but they are lower than the prices offered by the two market leaders VeriSign Inc and GeoTrust Inc.
Network Solutions Inc was the first domain name registrar, which started to sell SSL certificates, when it was owned by VeriSign Inc and continued to sell certificates as an independent company. Register.com sells GeoTrust’s SSL certificates.
According to Parsons, Go Daddy is the fastest-growing domain name registrar. He said that the company would be selling SSL certificates to its domain name customers.
VeriSign was the first company to offer SSL certificates and is still the leader on this market. It offers its own brand of certificate and the Thawte brand, which it has acquired. These two brands account for more than a half of the SSL certificate market.
SecuritySpace, which provides a monthly report of the SSL certificate market shares, said that VeriSign has a market share of 50.2%, down from 56.2% a year ago and VeriSign’s own brand accounts for the larger part of its market share than the Thawte brand. GeoTrust’s market share has increased to 14.8% from 13.74% a year ago, Security Space noted. Comodo CA Ltd, which ranks third, is also the fastest-growing player on the market and has seen it share increase to 5.3% from 1.2% a year ago.
GeoTrust offers its cheapest certificates for $159.95 for the first year and $129.95 for the subsequent years. VeriSign offers 40-bit certificates for $395 per year and 128-bit certificates for $895 per year, with warranties ranging from $100,000 to $250,000.
Comodo sells certificates for $139.95 for two year, which is the cheapest price among the leading players on the market and is probably a major reason for the company’s quick growth. Comodo has no root certificate and its SSL certificates refer to the old Baltimore Technologies root, which is now managed by BeTrusted Inc.
Price is an important factor on the SSL certificate market, but it certainly is not everything. VeriSign has an established brand for SSL security. However, its speed and support are its weakness.
GeoTrust, for instance, provides 10-minute turnaround on certificate sales by using an automated process to verify that certificate buyers are associated with the domains for which they buy certificates.
Warren Adelman, senior vice president at Go Daddy, said that the company would deliver its certificates to new customers in a matter of hours with a semi-automated process that relied on Whois and Dun & Bradstreet lookups and a phone confirmation.
Go Daddy anticipates to repeat its success from the domain name market to the SSL certificate market. The company, which was the 47th-biggest domain name registrar three years, is now ranked second or third with 4.4 million domain name registrations. Parsons expects to outdo the market leader Network Solutions Inc in two years.
