Afilias Looks Forward to Providing Support for .mob Top-level Domain

Afilias, the registry for .info top-level domain (TLD), announced that it looks forward to providing support for the .mob TLD. The new TLD will be reserved for websites intended for viewing on mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The .mob TLD was proposed by a group of communications and IT companies and organizations, including the GSM Association, HP, Nokia, Microsoft, Orange, Samsung, Sun Microsystems, Vodafone ant the 3G operator 3.

Afilias also announced that it would provide back-end support for the .asia TLD registry, which would be based in Hong Kong. Besides managing the .info TLD, Afilias provides back-end support for .org TLD and other domains.

Heather Carle, director of communications at Afilias, said that the company plans to support domain names that use ASCII characters as well as characters from various Asian languages. Afilias already provides support for .info domains in German that use umlauts and accented characters. The company said that 13,000 domain names using the additional German characters were registered in the first twelve hours after the service was launched on March 17, 2004. The mapping of the additional German characters is a relatively simple task. However, the same thing could be a much bigger challenge in Asia, where characters from different languages often overlap.

Afilias is based in Dublin, but the company has fewer than ten employees in Ireland. The company employs 40 people in its technical operations bureau in Toronto and has 10 more employees in an administration and marketing office outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
